What 2006 has taught me
December 19th, 2006 by Robert
On a suggestion from the Instigator blog on a group writing project, I’m posting what I have learned in 2006. 2006 has seen a lot of changes for me personally and professionally, from moving half way across the country to buying our first house to taking blogging seriously. So here is a simple breakdown of this year:
1. The company I was previously working for did not get sold off as expected and moral went into the tank due to the prospect of us being outsourced. I had never seen such a change in a department’s moral before like that and I don’t want to see it again. Pissing off your entire IT department is never a good idea.
2. Buying our first house was both exciting and scary. To top it off, we had to house shop in a weekend before we moved. Talk about pressure!
3. Companies make some of the stupidest technology decisions I have ever seen. I am amazed how companies don’t listen to their own employees. I vowed not to make those same mistakes when I am a software mogul.
4. I realized how big the blogging community really is. Not only is the range of topics amazing but also the fact that people can actually make money doing it.
5. I decided that working for someone else just doesn’t do it for me. I always kind of knew this but after working for several varieties of companies I’m pretty sure I’m right.
6. Due to number 5, I decided to quit goofing off and finally build some software that will hopefully free me from the bonds of a paycheck written by someone else. I started two projects to make this happen.
So there is a few of the many things I have learned this year. I’m really looking forward to 2007!

Thanks Vernon. I hope to have something out pretty soon and as you probably have guessed, I’m looking at advertising opportunities as well.
