Stoking the fire

Many business ideas are never realized because of one simple fact, you lose motivation. This loss may be disguised in many ways, from “I don’t have the time” to “I don’t have the money”, but it usually comes down to motivation pure and simple.
I have certainly fallen victim of this myself on many occasions. I have had at least 3 or 4 business ideas that got started but lost motivation for one reason/excuse or another and the opportunity disappeared. It is kind of funny because my wife and I both hound each other about the ventures that the other has let slip past, rarely looking at our own lapses.
Of the several business projects that my wife and I have going, one in particular is our potential bread winner. Most, well all but one, of our ideas are web/software based and this one is the most involved. It is aimed at being a SaaS solution (Software as a Service) initially with the idea that it could be sold as a shrink wrap solution down the line. I have a large portion written for it and I am close to the point that I can open up for business with an initial release.
Keep The Fire Going
There are three things that are keeping me going on this particular project. The first is interest from my wife. She asks me every now and then how progress is going and that helps to keep it fresh in my mind and my desire to have progress to report. Second is the product’s potential for broad marketability, so while I will target one or two specific markets initially, it can be applied to several markets rather easily. The third is that a coworker and myself talk about the potential and possibilities quite often.
So of the three, constant discussion is what helps the most. Note that there are two different discussions that happen here and both are equally helpful. The first is more general and progress oriented. The second is more technology and implementation oriented.
Keep Talking
So while you are thinking of that next business idea, keep talking to people close to you personally and professionally for ideas and feedback. It will help keep you motivated.
