Removing supplemental search results

July 6th, 2007 by Robert

Since the fantasy sports site RotoTown.com was launched, I’ve been keeping an eye on how Google sees it. Well today I saw that there were several items in the supplemental results. Not good at all.

What are supplemental results?

If you are familiar with the term, supplemental results are those URLs that Google basically doesn’t like. This is largely do to Google thinking that you have duplicate content and duplicate content can mean spam. Google wants unique results for its users and rightfully so.

How do you find them?

There a few ways to find the results. The easiest is to do a site search and then look at the last page or two. For example for Rotown this would be:

site:rototown.com

An example of the results would look like:
supplemental search results
Notice that both of these results are in the supplemental index. The first item has a url (shown in green) that looks like

rototown/component/option,com_newsfeeds/catid,21/Itemid,48/

This URL structure is the default Joomla! SEF URL scheme that I outlined in my previous post and not the more friendly URL scheme shown by the second result shown, which is

rototown.com/heading-uptown/tom-glavine-p-nym-2.html

So why are they both in the supplemental index?

One of two things happened. First is that the pages with the non-friendly URLs got indexed before I installed the SEF plugin and haven’t been removed yet and the same page with the SEF plugin is now

http://rototown.com/townspeople/nfl-blogs/index.php

and here is the problem. Two different URLs that point to the same content. BINGO, duplicate content!

The second possibility is that there is a link using the old URL internally on the site that I haven’t caught. More unlikely, but still possible.

How to fix it

In this case the fix is relatively simple. I opened up the .htaccess file and told the search bots not to follow any URL that has /content/ and /component/ in them. This means that eventually Google will see that it isn’t supposed to follow those links and will remove them from the index. When that happens I have no idea, but once they are gone it will help with the search results much better.

The key

In summary, the key to getting your site pages in good results is first to make sure they don’t go into the supplemental index. It doesn’t matter how well you have optimized the page with keyword densities, content placement, URL structuring, etc. if the page ends up in the supplemental index your hosed. Find out how it got there and remove it. If you are using a content management system or blog software, the usual cause is different URLs pointing to the same content.
