Is Technorati really useful?
March 1st, 2007 by Robert
I wonder what percentage of Technorati users really use their service. Maybe it is just me, but I rarely go to their site and do any actual searches. I have a sneaking suspicion that most people are registered users so that they can benefit(?) from the ranking service more than anything else.
Don’t get me wrong, they have a nice product but the first time I went there it wasn’t obvious to me what it was they were offering. A few months later I still wasn’t quite sure and finally settled on the notion that it was pretty much just a search engine for blogs with a few other things added like ranking and such.
Prominent bloggers often highlight their Technorati ranking and they should. It isn’t easy getting to the top and for those that do and monetize their blog, that is a good marketing point. What about everybody else? Does it make it any easier for the non top-10,000 to get noticed? Probably not.
So I am curious as to if you actually find Technorati’s service useful other than their widget and tagging. Do you go to their site and do searches?

More beef on Technorati at A Mogul To Be
[...] Over on the Net Business Blog, Matt Coddington has a post called Technorati is a Joke which is a little harsher than my recent post Is Technorati really useful?. My post was more on the usability and general helpfulness of Technorati while Matt’s criticizes their ranking algorithm which ironically I think is one thing that really makes Technorati a viable service.
