Building a niche site empire

August 17th, 2007 by Robert

I’ve decided to take my plunge into niche sites even deeper than my initial site and naturally I’m going to blog about all of it. I followed a couple tips from various blogs (don’t have the links handy at the moment but I will add them later as they do deserve credit), used Google and Overture to see what is getting traffic and what could possibly make a little money. A few words of wisdom if you plan on going this route yourself…

Don’t expect a windfall

The first thing to understand about most niche sites, especially small ones, is not to expect a ton of revenue from a single site. The idea is to build many of these sites and get a little revenue from each. There are two important reasons for this.

First, don’t put all your eggs in one basket

This almost seems too obvious but can be easily overlooked. By building many of these sites, you will prevent yourself from relying on a single site for income. Much like diversification in stocks, this will prevent you from losing a significant percentage of your revenue if one of your sites is no longer making money for any reason.

Second, keep the interest going

If you focus solely on a single site and spend all your time trying to make it perfect, then find out in the long run that is really doesn’t make any money you might feel like hanging it up. That would be a shame. I suggest building some sites that you are really interested in, something you are passionate about, and not worry too much about the money it generates. Build many other sites that are not necessarily in your primary interest and let them all make a little money.

Seems overly simplistic doesn’t it? Yes it can seem that way, but look at it like this: If you spend, oh a week or so on a single site and let it run then go and build another, and another, you won’t feel like you’ve wasted your time when the money does start coming in. Even if each site alone only makes an average of a few dollars a day, it can add up quickly as you build more sites.
