A new way for the hottest startups to get noticed

February 2nd, 2007 by Robert

Michael Arrington of TechCrunch fame is partnering with Jason Calacanis of calacanis.com to put together The TechCrunch20 Conference. The idea is that several demo style conferences exist, but it costs tens of thousands of dollars for a company to participate. This is fine for those companies that have that kind of budget, but many startups don’t. This would also allow some possible cash starved companies with great ideas to get in front of investors that they normally would not have.

So, this new format is going to be a two day event that will take the hottest 20 web startups and let them demo their product for free. As Michael says:

They will be selected to participate based on merit alone.

He goes on to say that a committee of experts and journalists will be the ones picking the 20 entrants, hopefully eliminating the potential for any individual bias. There is no word on how this will all be funded, but as long as the funding has no impact on the choices made this could be a big hit.
